Career Help
Camillus House’s latest initiative, the Career Help Program, prepares persons who are homeless and formerly homeless to find and keep meaningful employment. The program provides individuals with the opportunity to achieve their educational, vocational, and employment goals through industry-specific career tracks.
Educational Program
Educational Program is designed for individuals who are interested in obtaining their GED. This component is provided in partnership with the Miami Dade Public School System, which will expand its program of individually structured classes in GED through Camillus House.
Vocational Training
Vocational Training is designed to provide individuals with specific trade skills that they can transfer into paying jobs in the community. Through this training program, participants receive educational training, hands on training, appropriate certifications, mentoring, experience building, and stamina building. Camillus House has partnered with several local businesses that have agreed to provide training assistance and certification for individuals in our program. Training units include:
- Warehouse: Trainees learn all functions of warehouse operations, including shipping, receiving, forklift operations, and data entry. Skills include OSHA certification, record keeping, communication, and upkeep. Trainees work at several different warehouses during their training. City Furniture and ABC Distributors have both committed to hiring graduates of this program.
- Housekeeping/General Maintenance: Trainees learn different general trades, including janitorial, grounds keeping, maintenance, and housekeeping. Skills include OSHA certification, general maintenance repairs, and landscaping and upkeep of grounds.
- Food Services: Trainees learn all facets of large restaurant operations, including food preparation, serving, cleaning, maintenance and storage. Skills include sanitation standards, maintenance of FIFA guidelines, etiquette, hospitality, and communication. Trainees work for a dining hall that produces over 800 home cooked meals daily.
- Concierge/Guest Services: Trainees learn different hospitality services, including assisting and directing guests, laundry services, and clothing room services, which operate similarly to a thrift store. Skills include receiving, hospitality, security, multi-tasking, collaboration, and organization. Trainees will work in an environment where they must interact with over 80 guests daily.
Job Development
Job Development provides persons who are homeless and formerly homeless with a job coach to assist them with all areas pertaining to job search and placement. The job coach also conducts regular group meetings open to everyone to introduce the fundamental needs of job readiness, designed for individuals who are not yet ready, but are preparing for work in the future. The job development track includes individualized skill boosting, including resume preparation, interviewing skills, job search skills, and appropriate work conduct. Once the goal of employment is reached, the job developer will continue to work with the individual on an as-needed basis.
