Homeless Prevention
In addition to providing many services helping homeless persons to get off of the streets, Camillus also works to prevent homelessness before it begins. Much of Camillus’ homeless prevention efforts take place at the policy level, whereby Camillus continually advocates for public policy that addresses poverty, substance abuse, mental illness, affordable housing, and other issues that contribute to homelessness. Camillus also provides direct services, including:
Temporary Housing Assistance
Camillus offers one-time rental assistance for persons at risk of eviction, who are not eligible for assistance through other rental assistance programs. Clients must agree to participate in case management services, aimed at helping them increase their income or reduce their housing expenses, so that they do not face eviction again in the future. In conjunction with these services, Camillus works to educate individuals and families on how to manage their finances and achieve a more stable living situation. Camillus is also able to place homeless families into motels on a temporary basis when shelter beds are all full.
Homeless Prevention Coordination
A Homeless Prevention Coordinator is also working to establish a database bringing together homeless prevention resources from throughout Miami-Dade County, so that all local providers have access to the same information regarding the availability of rental assistance and other related services. This Coordinator also works with the Prevention Case Manager to answer the Homeless HELP-Line, a toll-free number providing information and referrals to persons in Miami-Dade who are homeless or near-homeless. Callers to the line who request information on rental assistance are connected to the Camillus program.
