Referrals, Screening and Admission
The Camillus organization has a long history of providing services to poor and homeless persons, and over the years has built trust and established significant rapport with the “hard to reach clients” who live on the streets of Miami. Maintaining this relationship, ISPA has established multiple pathways for clients to access services. Many clients are referred internally from other Camillus programs, including the free afternoon meal, outreach teams, day center services, overnight shelter, and housing programs. The Camillus Health Concern clinic and its Project SafeStreet Outreach Team also identify and refer many clients, as do a wide range of outside agencies participating in Camillus’ formal and informal networks. Throughout the years, however, ISPA ’s most effective outreach method has been the word-of-mouth on the streets, from other ISPA clients. Potential clients are assessed by a ISPA Counselor for eligibility and motivation to enter treatment.
Upon admission, clients are assigned a Primary Counselor, who also acts as case manager. Camillus strives to eliminate all barriers to treatment, and is able to meet all of the individual’s basic needs so clients are free to focus on their recovery. Housing, meals, clothing, and health care are all provided within Camillus’ own continuum of services.
Treatment Phases:
ISPA’s four treatment phases allow clients to progress through treatment at their own pace. Clients have developed their own lingo to describe the process of completing one phase and entering the next: “Phasing Up.” Clients are supported and recognized by their peers when they Phase Up.
