Camillus Health Concern
Founded in 1984, Camillus Health Concern, Inc. (CHC) is sponsored by the Brothers of the Good Shepherd under the auspices of the United States Catholic Church and has been a leader in providing primary health care services to the homeless and low-income populations of Miami-Dade County. CHC has been a Health Care for the Homeless grantee through the Department of Health and Human Services' Bureau of Primary Health Care since 1989 and was designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center in 1996. CHC's Board of Directors is 51% consumer-based, which strengthens all clinical, operational, and programmatic processes.
CHC services are provided at 336 NW 5 th Street in downtown Miami. Opened in June of 1998, the state-of-the art health center offers homeless persons the opportunity to receive quality care in a professional and comfortable setting. In addition, primary health care services are provided at two community sites: Better Way of Miami (a substance abuse treatment facility and program for homeless individuals) and the Salvation Army (a shelter with multiple social service programs for homeless individuals and families), and patients are referred to the main center as needed.
CHC's health care providers are specially trained in meeting the unique health care and social service needs of homeless persons. Much emphasis is placed on providing culturally sensitive services. A tri-lingual staff is able to provide services in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole and all materials, including posted signs, educational brochures, and health care forms, are printed in the three languages.
