Dr. Paul R. Ahr

On behalf of the Brothers of the Good Shepherd, the Boards of Directors and staff of Camillus House and Camillus Health Concern, it is my great pleasure to congratulate Dr. Pedro Jose Greer, Jr. on being named a 2009 U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient.

Dr. Greer is truly deserving of this high honor as the founder of the Camillus Health Concern (CHC), which has improved the health and quality of life for tens of thousands of poor and homeless residents throughout Greater Miami.

Just as the Brothers of the Good Shepherd formed Camillus House in 1960 to serve Miami’s neediest, Dr. Greer dedicated his time, energies and resources to create a medical treatment facility for those living on the very edges of our society. Beginning in 1984, his leadership and insight established CHC as a pioneering health-care institution that remains a role model for other major urban centers nationwide.

It is especially fitting that exactly twenty-five years after the Tuesday night in the late summer of 1984 when Dr. “Joe” Greer and his colleagues treated their first patients at the Camillus House shelter on NE 1st Avenue in Miami, President Barak Obama will be honoring this pioneer physician to the poor and heroic healer of the homeless. Let us celebrate Dr. Greer’s tremendous achievements, with the hope that his example will inspire a new generation of health care professionals to bring continuing care and comfort to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County..

Sincerely,

Paul R. Ahr
