Our program says that each of you is a miracle. Could it be that today we have 40 miracles here in the Magic City? Deepak Chopra says that “Miracles happen every day. Not just in remote country villages or at holy sites halfway across the globe, but here, in our own lives.” So, yes, it’s possible that we could have 40 miracles here in the Magic City.
How awesome could these miracles be? William MacNeile Dixon describes birth as the “sudden opening of a window, through which you look out upon a stupendous prospect. For what has happened? A miracle. You have exchanged nothing for the possibility of everything.” These miracles can be as awesome as birth itself – a veritable rebirth - when you exchange nothing for the possibility of everything.”
Each morning at daybreak I walk to the beach, timing my arrival to coincide with the sunrise. Daily I recall that “We can only appreciate the miracle of a sunrise if we have waited in the darkness,” and I think of you who have waited in your own personal darkness and have, with the blessings of the Brothers of the Good Shepherd, the dedication of our Board of Directors, the generosity of our benefactors and the talents of our staff exchanged nothing – that is, exchanged nothingness - for the possibility of everything.
Are these the only miracles here in the Magic City? No, I think there is one more: the miracle of the dedication of the Brothers of the Good Shepherd, our Board and other benefactors and our staff, stated so clearly by Mother Teresa of Calcutta when she said: “The miracle is not that we do this work, but that we are happy to do it.”
And so, on behalf of our Brothers, our benefactors and our staff, we are happy today to both welcome you and celebrate with you your great – your miraculous - achievement.
