CAMILLUS HOUSE DEMOLISHING ABANDONED BUILDINGS ON JULY 7 TO PREPARE FOR NEW HOMELESS SERVICES CAMPUS

MIAMI – Camillus House will start the demolition of the buildings on its newly acquired property on Monday, July 7, beginning at 9 a.m., clearing the way to begin the construction of its new 3.1-acre campus on Northwest Seventh Avenue between 15th and 17th streets.
The property was recently transferred from the University of Miami to the State of Florida, which granted Camillus House a 60-year lease on the land. Construction of the new campus is expected to be completed in 2010, at which time Camillus House will consolidate onto the property an expanded array of services for the chronically homeless.
The BG Group of Boca Raton was commissioned by the City of Miami to handle the demolition. The company will use an excavator to tear down a block-long series of connected concrete buildings, known as “the Glass Buildings,” sitting on the property. Prior to the University of Miami owning the property, the sturdy Glass Buildings housed a glass factory.
The BG Group will also remove all debris from the buildings, the foundations and the asphalt parking areas to the north and south on the property. It is expected that debris clearing process of the parcel will take two weeks.
The construction of the new 3.1 acre state-of-the-art Camillus House campus is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year. The completed campus will feature multiple buildings, including a total of 340 beds for individuals who will be provided a wide range of social services and clinical treatment programs. The beds will increase emergency, transitional and permanent supported housing, and facilitate the addition of residential treatment and emergency housing for women.
Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County for 48 years. Established by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd in 1960, Camillus House has grown steadily over the years from a small overnight shelter into a full-service center for persons who are poor and homeless.
