CAMILLUS HOUSE BREAKING GROUND AT NEW CENTER ON OCT. 22, MARKING NEW CHAPTER IN EFFORT TO END CHRONIC HOMELESSNESS

October 16, 2008

MIAMI – Camillus House will break ground at the site of its new 340-bed center in a ceremony to be held on Wednesday, October 22, beginning 10:30 a.m., at 1603 Northwest Seventh Avenue (between 15th and 17th streets). The event is anticipated to be a milestone in Camillus’ effort to end chronic homelessness in Greater Miami.

Guests at the groundbreaking ceremony are expected to include federal, state and local elected officials, as well as prominent leaders of the business, civic and not-for-profit sectors.

The event will also feature the announcement of a major gift to the Camillus House “Open the Door to Hope” Campaign from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The 3.1-acre Camillus House Center will feature multiple buildings, including a total of 340 beds for individual who are chronically homeless. The center will provide a wide range of social services and clinical treatment programs. The facility will increase emergency, transitional and permanent supported housing, and facilitate residential treatment and emergency housing for women. The new center also will include a kennel for individuals with pets.

Additionally, the new center has been officially registered as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification project, and will therefore be Florida’s first energy-efficient and environmentally balanced facility serving the needs of persons who are chronically homeless. Construction is expected to be completed in 2010.

Camillus House has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County for 48 years. Established by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd in 1960, Camillus House has grown steadily over the years from a small overnight shelter into a full-service center for persons who are poor and homeless.
